Mr Steve Schallhorn is one of the most respected laser eye surgeons in the world and is currently the chairman of the Optical Express International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB). Mr Steve Schallhorn is regarded by his peers as a laser eye surgery expert and this is due to his vast experience in the field. His expertise is such that he is a laser eye surgery instructor in the United States. In 2007, Mr Steve Schallhorn retired from the U.S Navy where he was director of the refractive surgery centre. He was the first surgeon in the U.S Department of defence to perform Lasik and implantable contact lens surgery. Mr. Steve Schallhorn has been a prolific writer of medical papers and has had in excess of 200 published. He is also the author of numerous academic journals. He lectures regularly and is a visiting professor of medicine at Harvard, USC, UCSF and Baylor universities in the USA

Professor Jan Venter is a world leader in laser eye surgery having carried out in excess of 60,000 procedures including Lasik, epi-Lasik, Implantable Contact lenses and Refractive lens exchange. As well as being a full time refractive surgeon for optical express, Professor Jan Venter is also clinical director of the Optical Express international Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) and is a member of the British Society of Refractive Surgery and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Professor Jan Venter grew up in South Africa and following graduation from the Pretoria University in 1973, he progressed to become the professor of the Ophthalmology Dept at the University of Stellenbosch. In 1993 he introduced the excimer laser to South Africa giving him the reputation as a pioneer in laser eye surgery. His fantastic work continued which saw him achieve the highest honour that the South African Ophthalmological Society can give, the DJ Wood Medal. Professor Jan Venter has published over 100 academic papers and is a regular on the lecturing circuit due to his vast knowledge and experience in laser eye surgery.

David Teenan

Mr David Teenan is an experienced refractive surgeon having carried out over 9,500 laser eye surgery procedures to date including both Lasek and Lasik. A fully trained ophthalmologist, David Teenan has undergone additional training in refractive surgery. Mr David Teenan is regularly assessed by the International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) ensuring he is performing at the highest possible level. Mr. David Teenan qualified from Dundee University in 1992 and worked in many ophthalmology posts in various hospitals throughout the UK. Mr Waseem Aziz is a fully trained ophthalmologist and has combined this with additional laser eye surgery training. Mr Waseem Aziz graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 1993 and subsequently worked in various hospitals around the country experiencing all aspects of eye care and general surgery. Mr Nafaa Bader is an experienced laser eye surgeon having already carried out over 9000 procedures including both Lasik and Lasek treatments. He has also carried out many cataract procedures and has a particular interest in medical retina and laser therapy. Mr Nafaa Bader has a wide knowledge base and has undergone additional specialist training in refractive surgery. Mr Nafaa Bader is a full time laser surgeon with Optical Express and is annually assessed by the International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) ensuring his standards remain at the level required to carry out laser eye surgery. Mr Nafaa Bader is involved in laser eye surgery research and regularly lectures throughout the UK and Ireland. Mr Nafaa Bader has had extensive additional training in refractive surgery, including completing the advanced Lasik course at the famous Moorfields eye hospital. Mr Nafaa Bader graduated in 1986 having gained a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree and then went on to specialise in ophthalmology. Following further training at Dublin University and Edinburgh University Mr Nafaa Bader began a post as an Ophthalmic SHO at the Altnagelvin Area Hospital in Londonderry. Mr Rodney Blumenfeld has already carried out over 22,000 laser eye surgery procedures many of which have been with one of the most advanced refractive surgery lasers in the world, the VISX S4IR. Mr Rodney Blumenfeld is a full time laser eye surgeon with Optical Express and had undergone additional refractive surgery training. He attends the twice yearly International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) Conferences and is annually assessed by this board ensuring he is at the level required to carry out laser eye surgery. Mr Rodney Blumenfeld is from South Africa and graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg in 1995 and proceeded to a registrar post at Africa’s biggest eye hospital, St John Eye Hospital in Johannesburg. During his time here, he completed 5 years specialising in Ophthalmology gaining a wealth of experience and knowledge in various different areas including both cataract and glaucoma surgery. Miss Susanna Boytha has already completed over 33,000 refractive surgeries, many of which have been for Lasik and Lasek. She has a vast experience of refractive specialities and is a member of many international laser surgery bodies. She is a very successful ophthalmologist and whilst working for Optical Express is assessed annually by the International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) to help ensure she is maintaining her exceptionally high standards of laser eye surgery. Miss Susanna Boytha has lectured in many countries throughout the world and is an established teacher of refractive surgery techniques. Her excellent research has led to her publishing many academic papers which are recognised internationally. Miss Susanna Boytha qualified as a doctor in 1985 from the Semmelweis University of General Medicine in Budapest and through hard work progressed to gain her ophthalmology diploma from the Hungarian Board of Ophthalmology. In 1998 she completed her fellowship in corneal and refractive surgery at the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead. She then went on to hold many ophthalmological positions in hospitals throughout the UK including both Plymouth and Bristol hospitals. In 2001 she became the medical director of a private laser eye surgery clinic in Scotland and in 2002 Miss Susanna Boytha became a Member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in the United Kingdom.

Mr Jonathan Carr is a highly qualified ophthalmic surgeon who specialises in laser eye surgery. Mr. Lorimer Esselaar is South African and completed his MB and ChB degrees at the University of Cape Town in 1980 and his MMed (Ophth) degree in 1988 at the University of Stellenbosch. Mr Alex George is a well respected refractive surgeon with experience in both Lasik and Lasik. Since completing his additional specialist training in refractive surgery Mr Alex George has completed over 18,000 procedures. He is annually assessed by the International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) meaning his standards of surgery are continually assessed. This is compulsory as a surgeon for Optical Express. Mr Alex George is Indian and he obtained his medical degree in 1975 from Aligarh University in India and achieved his Ophthalmology certification in 1984 from Bombay University. His continued studies led him to acquire his FRCS (Ed) qualification in 1989 and the FRCOphth qualification in 1990. He completed his refractive surgery training between 1994 and 1995 at Georgetown University in Washington DC. Mr Alex George is certified on the VISX S3 and S4IR lasers and also has certification with the Moria M2 Microkeratomes. As well as laser eye surgery Mr Alex George is also an expert in the other disciplines of refractive surgery namely refractive lens exchange and Implantable Contact lenses. He is well respected throughout the UK and has delivered many lectures and written many academic papers which have been successfully published.

Mr Osama Giledi is a highly skilled refractive surgeon with vast experience in Lasik, Lasek, Intralase and waverfront guided laser eye surgery. To date he has had carried out over 15,000 laser eye surgery procedures and is extremely knowledgeable in the field. Mr Osama Giledi is a refractive surgeon for Optical express whilst also working as a consultant Ophthalmologist at the Queen Victoria Hospital NHS trust, East Grinstead which is a specialist centre for treating complex corneal problems. As an ophthalmologist for Optical express, as part of our ongoing assessment Mr Osama Giledi is evaluated annually by the International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB). Such is Mr. Osama Giledi expertise; he is actually involved in training other ophthalmologists in the use of the S4 CustomVue excimer laser both nationally and internationally. Mr Osama Giledi is also involved in teaching ophthalmologists at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery emphasising his vast knowledge in this area.

Mr Dimitri Kazakos is an exceptional ophthalmologist with a particular interest in cataract and refractive surgery. He is at the forefront of the latest and most advanced laser eye surgery and has performed over 11,000 laser procedures to date including Wavefront, Lasik and Lasek. He also is vastly experience in Intra Ocular surgery having carried out over 4000 of these procedures including refractive lens exchange and Implantable contact lenses. Mr Dimitri Kazakos is Greek and graduated from the Marmara University of Istanbul in 1997 before relocating to the UK to begin his medical career. His first Ophthalmology post was at the Oxford Eye Hospital where after a successful post there he went onto to gain vast experience at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, Essex County Hospital in Colchester, Ipswich General Hospital, Bristol Eye Hospital and Southampton Eye Unit for a Fellowship in Corneal and External Eye Diseases. He then returned to his native Greece where he gained his Refractive Fellowship in the University of Crete with the world renowned Prof. Pallikaris, the inventor of LASIK.

Khalid Khan

Mr Khalid Khan has vast experience having already carried out a staggering 51,000 plus laser eye surgery procedures. He is a refractive surgeon for Optical express and a well regarded consultant for the NHS. He has a vast knowledge base in ophthalmology and has undergone extensive specialist training in refractive surgery. He is assessed every year by the International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) as part of optical express’ continuing assessment process. Mr Khalid Khan achieved his medical degree at the University of Newcastle medical school in 1982 and continued his ophthalmological career in the west Yorkshire area. Following a medical post in Bournemouth Mr Khalid Khan then continued his training at the Hallamshire hospital in Sheffield gaining the title of Registrar in Ophthalmology. During his time at Sheffield, such was his development in Ophthalmology that he gained his Fellowship from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. In 1989, Mr. Khan then moved to Saudi Arabia where he became a Consultant Ophthalmologist at The Jeddah Eye Hospital. During his time here, he spent much time in a teaching role passing on his vast knowledge to up and coming ophthalmologists.

Mr Stefan Klopper is an active member of many professional and academic bodies and is assessed annually by the International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB). Mr Stefan Klopper is South African and attained his medical degree at the Grootte Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. Having trained as a general practitioner Mr Stefan Klopper decided to specialise in ophthalmic surgery qualifying as an eye surgeon in 1990. Mr Frank Lavery is a highly experienced and highly skilled ophthalmic surgeon who has undergone specialist training in the field of refractive surgery. He has vast experience in both Lasik and Lasek and to date has carried out over25,000 laser eye surgery procedures. Mr Frank Lavery is assessed on an annual basis by the International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) and attends their refractive surgery conferences every 6 months. He is a one of only 35 ophthalmologists to be a member of the prestigious International Keratorefractive Club. Mr Bal Manoj has performed over 5,500 laser eye surgeries and is an ophthalmic surgeon for Optical Express and a consultant for the NHS. Mr Bal Manoj has a broad skill set in Ophthalmology and is renowned for his complex intraocular surgery including cataract and intraocular lens treatment as well as squint surgery in both adults and children. Mr Bal Manoj is assessed every year by the International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) and attends their refractive surgery conferences two times per year. Mr Bal Manoj began his distinguished medical career by gaining a masters degree in Ophthalmology at the university of Bombay in India. He finished his surgical training in the UK, gaining his Certificate for Completion of Specialist Training after having worked in both London and Cardiff. Mr Bal Manoj is also involved in regular teaching work and has also been involved in much laser eye surgery research. He is a Trainer at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists for microsurgical skills and cataract courses, thus illustrating the reputation he has in this field.

Mr Sanjay Mantry is a fully trained Ophthalmologist who is registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). His career as a laser eye surgeon has seen him perform over 5,500 procedures including both Lasik and Lasik. He is an active member of many professional bodies and regularly attends conferences to ensure he is abreast of the latest developments in the field of laser eye surgery. He is assessed annually by the International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) and he has given many presentations in conferences around the world. Mr Sanjay Mantry’s medical career began in Glasgow where he was consultant Ophthalmologist at the Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology in Glasgow's Gartnavel General Hospital. By 2004 he completed his higher specialist training programme (HST) in the West Midlands. He then progressed to the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre where he further developed his vast ophthalmologic surgical experience, becoming Specialist Registrar.

Mr Tom Materman is an extremely experienced and highly skilled refractive surgeon who has completed in excess of 14,000 laser eye surgery procedures. As well as his vast general ophthalmology knowledge he has also undergone specialist refractive surgery training. Mr Tom Materman regularly attends International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) conferences and is assessed by this prestigious board every year. Mr Tom Materman is from New Zealand and after gaining his medical degree he went on to pass the primary Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists exams in 1996. In 2003, Mr Tom Materman completed the RANZCO fellowship exams and accepted a fellowship post at the West of England Eye Unit in Exeter gaining valuable experience in the process. In 2005 and 2006, Mr Materman was fortunate to have a 12 month fellowship working with the world renowned refractive surgeon, where he gained valuable skills in the field of refractive surgery and Implantable contact lenses.

Mrs Joanna McGraw is an experienced and highly skilled laser eye surgeon who has completed in excess of 18,000 laser eye surgery procedures including both Lasik and Lasek. Mrs Joanna McGraw has also undergone specialist refractive surgery training and is an extremely competent laser eye surgeon. Mrs. Joanna McGraw regularly attends International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) conferences and is assessed by this prestigious board on an annual basis. Mrs Joanna McGraw achieved her medical degree from the University of Cape Town in South Africa and in 1985 went on to specialise as an ophthalmic surgeon gaining this qualification from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Mrs Joanna McGraw has been performing refractive surgery since 1994 and has successful run her own private clinic. She has worked extensively throughout the UK and the rest of the world gaining a reputation as an exceptional refractive surgeon.

Mr Shahriar Nabili is a fully trained ophthalmologist and has undergone specialist training in the field of refractive surgery. He in an active member of many professional bodies and has a keen interest in research. Mr Shahriar Nabili graduated from Glasgow University in 1997 gaining his medical degree. He completed his basic and higher training at the West Coast of Scotland hospitals and continued his education at the Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology, Gartnavel General Hospital, Glasgow. He currently holds the position of consultant Ophthalmologist at the Lanarkshire hospital.

Mr Andre Oberholster is a fully trained refractive surgeon who has carried out over 23,000 laser eye surgeries to date. He is an ophthalmic surgeon for Optical express and is well regarded in the field of laser eye surgery. He is a member of various professional bodies and his skills and knowledge are assessed annually by the International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB). Mr Andre Oberholster is South African and graduated from the University of Pretoria in 1984 with a masters degree in Medicine. He spent 2 years at the Military Hospital of Pretoria in the Ophthalmology Department before training to become a general practitioner which took him six years. Mr Andre Oberholster decided to return to ophthalmology and after 5 years of training at University of Stellenbosch he obtained his Masters Degree in Ophthalmology (MMed Ophth) in 1997. Over the past ten years he has spent time working at the Bristol Eye hospital and the Cape Eye Hospital.

Mr Manek Patel is one of Optical Express’ most experienced refractive surgeons having carried out over 30,000 laser eye surgery procedures. He has undergone specialist refractive laser training and is assessed annually by the International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB). He also attends their conferences twice yearly in a bid to keep abreast of the ever evolving field of refractive surgery. Mr Manek Patel qualified as a doctor in 1967 from the Grant Medical College in Bombay, India. He graduated as an ophthalmologist in 1972 after which he moved to London, achieving member status of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 1973. Mr Manek Patel furthered his experience working in some of the finest hospitals in London namely Moorfield’s, UCL and St George’s. Mr Patel also worked as a consultant at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Sutton General Hospital and Epsom General Hospital. During his time here, he performed many intra ocular surgery procedures and cataracts operations. Mr. Patel’s excellence saw him accredited by the Royal College of Ophthalmology in refractive surgery. His vast experience has seen him involved in the training of junior ophthalmic surgeons in Lasik where he has passed on his great knowledge.

Mr Jacobus Pauw is an Ophthalmologist with a vast experience having carried out over 16,500 refractive surgery procedures. He has completed additional specialist training in refractive surgery and is affiliated with all the important professional bodies. He is assessed annually by the International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) ensuring he is performing to the highest possible level. Mr Jacobus Pauw gained his masters degree in Ophthalmology in South Africa before relocating to the UK in 2001 to take up a consultant NHS post. Mr Faqir A Qazi is from Pakistan and graduated from the Khyber Medical College, Peshawar in 1985. Mr Faqir A Qazi then moved to Ireland where he completed his basic Ophthalmological training at Waterford Regional Hospitals and Cork University. In 1994 he obtained his MRCOphth and FRCS (Ophthalmology) from the Royal College of Surgeons in Glasgow and Royal College of Ophthalmologists in London. He then continued to work in Ireland as a senior registrar until 1999 when he decided to further his medical career in Canada. During his time in Canada he gained status as a clinical ophthalmic fellow at the University of Toronto in Ontario. Mr. Faqir A Qazi then moved back to England and worked successfully as a NHS consultant gaining valuable experience in the process. As of 2004 Mr Faqir A Qazi has been on the specialist register for Ophthalmology with the general medical council. He is a very experienced refractive surgeon and has performed in excess of 13,000 refractive procedures which include; Intralase Lasik, standard Lasik, Lasek, Conductive Keratoplasty (CK), Cataract surgery and IOL Implants.

Mr Bob Ververs is an extremely competent and experienced Ophthalmic surgeon who has carried out in excess of 7,000 procedures. He has been performing laser eye surgery since 1992 and he is widely regarded as the first person in Holland to perform the Lasik procedure. He was also the first surgeon in Holland to carry out the Intralase procedure giving him the reputation as a laser eye surgeon pioneer. He is assessed annually be the International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) and all attends their 6 monthly conferences.

The procedure itself took about 20 minutes in total, the surgeon chatted to me throughout which took my mind off it and my eyes didn't feel particularly uncomfortable afterwards. The following day my eye sight was much better and now two months later I can see better than I ever could with contact lenses.

I had to have lasek as apparently i have thin cornea and it was not safe to do lasik. It was a little more painful than i thought it might be - although my surgeon told me this would be the case. But this really is a small price to pay as my vision is unbelievable. I cant believe all the detail i can see without my spex on! Would def recommend it!

Without doubt the best thing i have ever done. I was one of those people who hated wearing glasses and also found contact lenses uncomfortable. When laser eye surgery started becoming more popular i decided i had to have it done so i saved for the past few years and finally had it done. I am so pleased with the results - i can drive and do everything without spex or lenses - thanks so much optical express!

I had struggled with poor eye sight most of my life an had to use glasses and contact lens all the time. Being a very active child and adult this I have always found to be a burden and subsequently led me to find an alternative solution. Laser eye surgery. Now I don't need to worry about swimming in the see with contact lens or lossing a pair of glasses. On n the whole I have found the experience liberating, even the surgery itself. I cannot recommend laser eye treatments enoug to those for whom it is an option

I had really bad eye sight (-7.00 both eyes) and so laser eye surgery was always something at the back of mind that i wanted to have done. I saw all the adverts on the tv about it and decided to book for a consulation. Optical express and all the staff were brilliant and i found the laser counsellors really helpful as well. I decided to go for the most expensive treatment as my eyes were so bad. wavefront and intralase both make for a more accurate treatment so i thought if i was going to have it done i may as well do it properly. I am so pleased i decided to do that as my vision now is practically perfect. I can drive without spex of lenses and that is something i never could have dreamed of! thanks to everyone at optical express who made this a reality

Do you treat ptosis

Optical express does not treat ptosis as this is not a laser eye surgery procedure. Ptosis refers to a drooping eye lid and you would be best to seek the advice of an optician or doctor.
