Varicose Veins

varicose veinsVaricose veins are extremely common affecting around 30% of the population at some point in our lives. They are normally found in the leg, with the calf being the most likely place to be affected. Although they can be unsightly, they generally only require treatment if they are causing you symptoms.

Varicose veins are caused when the blood does not flow properly which results in pooling of blood in the affected veins, which is what varicose veins are.

Varicose Veins affect both men and women although women are more likely to be affected. The reason for this is that certain female hormones can weaken the walls of the veins. As you get older you are more likely to develop Varicose veins and also if you work in a job that requires you to stand for long periods of time. Overweight people also tend to have a higher chance of developing varicose veins.

Varicose Vein Symptoms:

Not everyone who has varicose veins has symptoms and they vary from one individual to another. The most common symptoms are as follows:

  • Lumps under the skin.

  • Blue and purple areas under the skin.

  • Ankle swelling.

  • Discomfort/aching in the legs.

  • Restless feeling of legs.

What can I do about my Varicose Veins?

There are certain things you can do prior to needing varicose vein treatment and the simplest and most effective of these are as follows:

  • Take regular exercise: This helps the blood flow.

  • Lose weight/keep a healthy weight.

  • Don’t stand still for too long. If you are on your feet for long periods, keep moving!

  • Compression stockings can help.
