Laser hair removal side effects
Laser hair removal is an effective treatment for reducing unwanted hair and the results are generally impressive. Although there will not be a 100% reduction of the hair in the treated area, you will see a significant improvement. The treatment works by damaging the actual hair follicle which the hair grows out of which prevents it from growing back again.Although laser hair removal is considered a safe procedure there are still a few potential side effects that you need to be aware of. Any side effects that do occur are typically short lasting and minor.
The following lists the possible side effects that could occur following your treatment:
- Redness, itchiness, swelling and numbness: This is normal following the procedure and normally disappears within one hour of having the treatment. Occasionally these symptoms can last for 2-3 days although this is rare.
- Crusting / scab developing: This is much less common and again is only a temporary side effect.
- Infection: This is rare and treatable.
- Hyper pigmentation: This results in a darkening of the treated area and is more likely to happen if you already have dark or tanned skin. If required this can be easily remedied using a bleaching treatment.
- Hypo pigmentation: This is the opposite of hyper pigmentation and results in a lightening of the skin. Again this is normally only a temporary side effect.
Although there are laser hair removal side effects, in reality the treatment is extremely safe with most people experiencing little or no after effects at all. Most people can return to work and normal activities straight after the treatment and this is one of the reasons why it is such a popular procedure.
