Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillersDermal fillers treatment is a non surgical cosmetic treatment that is used to treat wrinkles, scarring and other depressions in the skin. They are also used to create volume and improve the appearance of the skin in the treated area.

Dermal fillers are used on both men and women and have the effect of making us look younger and more fresh faced.

Dermal fillers can also be used for ‘facial sculpting’ to give the face a more defined appearance. Examples of this are as follows:

  • Enhancing the appearance of the lips: The lips can be given a ‘greater volume’ and a ‘fuller’ appearance.

  • Enhance high cheek bones: Makes you look younger.

  • Cheek and chin dimples: The appearance of these can be dramatically improved.

  • Lines and frown lines: They can be used to ‘fill in’ the hollows that develop with frown lines.

What are dermal fillers made from?

Historically, dermal fillers were made from collagen which was normally derived from animals. This has now been largely replaced by manmade fillers such as RestylaneTeosyal and juvederm which have been specifically developed to enable the minimum recovery time.  The added advantage of manmade fillers is that they are animal free meaning they are unlikely to cause an allergic response. This compares with the collagen, which resulted in an allergic reaction in around 2-3% of the population.

How do dermal fillers work?

The dermal filler injection work by effectively ‘pumping up’ the area that is treated and levelling it with other parts of the skin to reduce any depressed areas such as frown lines or dimples. Results are generally seen instantly and they can last for up to 6 months. The dermal filler procedure is pretty much painless and has little or no recovery time.

How long do dermal fillers last?

Dermal fillers typically last for about 6- 8 months but this varies from one individual to another. It also varies depending on which part of the face is being treated so you will need to discuss this with your practitioner. The filler is slowly broken down and absorbed by the body, meaning that over time the appearance of the treated area will return to what it was previously. At this time you will need to have the treatment repeated to maintain the desired look that you had. You should factor this to the dermal fillers cost when you are deciding how much treatment you can afford.
