Chemical peel
Chemical peels are widely used and can treat a whole range of skin conditions including wrinkles, acne, scarring and frown lines. They are a cheap and non-invasive method of improving the appearance of your face and are seen as an alternative to more aggressive treatments such as laser skin treatment.Chemical peels vary in their type, strength and potency and a skilled practitioner will be able to advise you on the best one for your particular problem and skin type.
The strength of chemical peels are generally categorised in terms of their PH levels. The lower the PH level the stronger the peel. Beauty therapists are only allowed to treat people with chemical peels that have a PH that is higher than 2.5. These peels tend to offer a more superficial treatment and are used to give a general rejuvenation of the skin rather than to treat anything specific.
Deeper peels with a PH lower than 2.5 can only be applied by a medical practitioner and are generally used to treat skin conditions such as frown lines, uneven pigmentation and acne scarring. These peels tend to be more expensive but they do have more impressive results.
Chemical peels generally work by removing any dead, old or damaged cells from the surface of your skin to help improve its appearance. It is these dead skin cells that can often make the face look dull and tired and this is why removing them can have such a significant improvement on your appearance. They are effectively a deep skin exfoliation technique.
Although the results of chemical peels do vary, most people will find their skin to be smoother, firmer and younger looking following the treatment. Chemical peels are often combined with other treatments such as Microdermabrasion to get the very best results.
Types of Chemical Peels:
There are many different types of skin peels and there are new developments continually coming on to the market. The most common skin peels are obagi blue peel, Agera skin peels, TCA peels and Glycolic peels. These are all examples of chemical peels and have been proven to produce excellent results. You will need to go for a consultation to see which type of chemical peel is best for you and it will be determined by your skin type and condition of your skin. Some of the chemical peels will offer a deeper treatment and will be recommended if you have skin conditions such as acne or uneven pigmentation. If your skin is generally in good condition but you just want to 'freshen' it up a little bit then a more superficial chemical peel will probably be fine for you.Chemical peels will not however treat wrinkles or frown lines so you need to understand that there are limitations to what they can treat. If you have problems such as this you will be better suited to either dermal fillers or Botox injections.
Chemical peel cost:
The cost of skin peels vary widely and it depends on how many treatments you require. Prices range from £100 - £1000. You can read more about the cost of chemical peels at the following link: What do chemical peels cost?Got a question about chemical peels? Ask it in our non surgical cosmetic forum
