Botox for Sweating

Botox for sweatingMany people don’t realise that in addition to cosmetic purposes Botox can also be used to treat those who suffer from excessive sweating of the feet, armpits or other problem areas. Excessive sweating which has the medical name Hyperhidrosis is quite a common problem with a prevalence of around 2% of the population.

For those unlucky enough to have the condition it can lead to reduced self-confidence / self-esteem and can greatly affect a person's life. The cause of sweating varies for different individuals, with the most common reasons being stress or overheating. For some people however, the sweating is a constant menace without any obvious triggers or causes.

How does Botox treat sweating?

Botox injections work by inhibiting the nerves in the skin that control our sweating. These nerves send the signal to our sweat glands to trigger them to start sweating. By stopping this signal you will stop the glands from producing sweat.

Botox injections can be used to treat any problem areas throughout the body and the results normally last for around 6 – 8months. Clinical studies have proved that sweating can normally be reduced by about 75-80% of your normal amount. This can dramatically improve the quality of someone's life especially if they continually worrying about the amount they are sweating.

What happens during the procedure?

  • The Botox procedure is similar to that for cosmetic purposes only that generally more injections are required.
  • The Botox is injected into approximately 10 to 15 places spread evenly over the affected area. The procedure will normally take around 30 minutes in total but this could be longer if more than one area is being treated.

When will I first notice any improvement?

This does vary between individuals but most people will notice a reduction in sweating within 1 week of first having the treatment.

What is the cost of the treatment?

The price of the treatment will vary dependent on which area is to be treated and the extent of your sweating. Under arm treatment will typically cost around £500 per treatment. You can read more about pricing at the following link: Botox prices guide
