Multifocal LasikMultifocal Lasik

This is a procedure which as yet is not carried out in the UK as it has not been approved by the FDA in the USA. However multifocal Lasik is being successfully carried out in other countries around the world and may soon be available here.

Multifocal Lasik is a procedure which aims to correct people who need spectacles/contact lenses for both distance vision and near vision.

Such people may currently be wearing varifocal or bifocal glasses or have multifocal contact lenses. Multifocal Lasik is essentially the same procedure that is carried out using standard Lasik eye surgery, it is only the way in which the surgeon uses the laser to reshape your cornea that is different. The aim with Multifocal Lasik is to reshape your cornea so that there is any area that can focus for distance vision, an area that can focus for intermediate vision and an area that can focus for near vision. Different surgeons have preferences on the method used to reshape your cornea but their are 2 main options are:

The 2 Main Multifocal Lasik Methods:

  • 1) Central area for distance vision: With this multifocal Lasik technique the surgeon uses the laser to change the power of your cornea so that the central part of your vision is corrected for distance vision and the surrounding peripheral cornea is reshaped to correct your intermediate and near vision.
  • 2) Central area for near vision: With this multifocal Lasik technique the surgeon uses the laser to change the power of your cornea so that the central part of your vision is corrected for near vision and the surrounding peripheral cornea is reshaped to correct your distance and intermediate vision.

Results are improving with multifocal Lasik but at present there does tend to be higher risks of your vision regressing over time, increased risk of haloes and generally not perfect results. However this is certain to improve over time and in the near future it is likely to be a very effective laser vision correction option.
