Macular Degeneration causes

The cause of macular degeneration are not fully understood but there are certain factors that seem to increase the chances of you developing the disease. The risk factors are pretty much the same for both dry macular degeneration and wet macular degeneration. You may be able to reduce the chances of the condition progressing by making certain lifestyle changes.

Causes / Risk factors of macular degeneration

  • Age: The chance of developing macular degeneration is far higher in older people. This is especially the case in dry degeneration.
  • Genetics/family history: Some people/families seem more prone to developing the condition.
  • Smoking: There is a higher chance of developing the condition if you are a smoker. If you have been diagnosed with either form of macular degeneration, then it is strongly advised to stop smoking. This can reduce the risk of the condition progressing.
  • Nutrition/Diet: It is generally agreed that a healthy diet, high in vitamins and minerals is important for the health of your macular. Green leafy vegetables are especially good and some ophthalmologists will recommend that you take supplementary vitamins. There is some evidence to suggest that taking such supplements may slow down the progression of the condition.
  • General good health: People who are generally healthy, have low cholesterol, low blood pressure and are not over weight are at a lower risk of developing macular degeneration.
