Lasek RecoveryAfter Lasek

It is important to be fully informed about the Lasek recovery before you can confidently go ahead and have the surgery. People generally want to know when they can return to work after Lasek, what vision they should expect after Lasek and how much pain they are likely to experience.

Typical Lasek recovery:

  • After Lasek surgery you will be wearing a bandage contact lens (for protection) and this will be kept in your eyes for about 3 days.

  • During your lasek recovery you will have moderate pain and your surgeon will prescribe you pain killers as required.

  • After Lasek you will need to wear sun glasses as you will be sensitive to light. Don’t forget to bring them with you!

  • You will be prescribed antibiotics, anti inflammatory’s and anaesthetics to aid your Lasek recovery.

  • After the bandage lens has been removed (3 days) you can sometimes return to work. This varies greatly from individual to individual and is dependent on your particular type of work. If you work in a dry or dusty environment or your job requires a lot of physical exertion then you may need longer off work. Some people need up to 1 week off following Lasek eye surgery and this is more likely if your prescription was high.

  • The pain during the recovery period normally subsides after 2 – 3 days.

  • It is difficult to predict how quickly your vision will settle down after Lasek as it is dependent on the degree of your prescription. Higher prescriptions tend to take longer for your vision to settle down but this is not always the case. Most people will have settled vision about 2 - 3 days following the procedure.

  • After lasek surgery you will need someone with you to drive you home. Some people are able to drive within 4 days of having the procedure but this depends on how quickly your eye heals. Your optician/surgeon will advise you at your aftercare appointments when you meet the legal driving requirements.

  • After lasek eye surgery expect to have the following aftercare appointments: 1 day post op, 1 week post op, 1 month post op, 3 month post op and 6 month post op. Attending your aftercares is very important in ensuring your full Lasek recovery.
