Laser Eye Surgery CostLaser eye surgery cost

There are many factors that affect the cost of laser eye surgery and there is considerable variation between the different clinics that offer the treatment. When comparing prices for laser eye surgery it is important that you compare like for like as it is not always clear exactly what you are getting for your money.

For example, some clinics will offer a life time guarantee meaning they will perform any laser re-enhancements that you require for free regardless of when you had your initial surgery. Some clinics may charge for re-treatments, whilst others may do them for free for a limited period only following your initial surgery. E.g. 12 months.

Approximate Guide to Laser Eye Surgery Cost:

The following lists the range of prices you can expect to pay for laser eye surgery, although all clinics have different price structures and you need to be careful that you understand exactly what they are offering. Some clinics will display prices as total price regardless of your prescription, whereas other clinics will price their laser eye surgery depending on your prescription. The low price that is quoted may therefore only relate to a limited prescription range which you are not likely to be suitable for. It is normal for laser eye surgery clinics to quote 'per eye' so be sure to double any price that you see.

  • Laser eye surgery consultation: £0 - £175: Some clinics will offer a free laser eye surgery consultation without you having to leave a deposit. Other clinics will ask for a small deposit and refund it to you providing you turn up for your consultation. Other clinics will charge a fee ranging from £50 - £175 which will be taken off the price of your surgery should you decide to go ahead with it. The clinics charging the higher price for the consultation are likely to be surgeon led, meaning you will see the actual surgeon for your consultation as opposed to an Optometrist.

  • Standard Lasik: £395 to £1500 per eye. Please note that very few people will qualify for the £395 Lasik as it only relates to very mild prescriptions. Do not attend for a laser eye surgery consultation expecting to pay this as you are likely to be disappointed. Lasik cost typically increases as the prescription gets higher although some clinics have a fixed cost regardless of prescription.

  • Standard Lasek: - £395 to £1500 per eye.  As with Lasik, only mild prescriptions will qualify for the £395 Lasek. Do not arrive at a laser eye surgery consultation expecting to pay this as you are likely to be disappointed.

  • WavefrontAdd approximately £400 per eye. Wavefront is a premium add on to Lasik eye surgery and Lasek eye surgery and usually results in a better visual outcome. Some clinics will however perform wavefront as standard and this will be reflected in a higher starting price. See our wavefront guide for more information.

  • Intralase: Add approximately £300 per eye. Intralase is an example of femtosecond laser and describes the way in which the flap is created during Lasik. Femto-Lasik is also referred to as bladeless Lasik, as a laser is used to create the flap as opposed to a mechanical blade (microkeratome) with standard treatments. It is important to understand that Intralase is only one example of bladeless Lasik and different clinics will use different manufacturers such as Technolas Perfect Vision or Carl Zeiss Meditec to give the same results. As with wavefront, some clinics will perform bladeless Lasik as their standard treatment and this will be reflected in a higher starting price. To read more about this procedure please read the following link: Intralase

  • Monovision: £395 - £2500 per eye: Monovision laser eye surgery is the same price as the equivalent Lasik or Lasek that you choose. For example, if you decide to have standard Lasik and the price is £895 per eye then this will be the same for monovision. You can read more about this treatment at the following link: Monovision explained.

Factors Affecting Laser Eye Surgery Cost:

  • Prescription: Higher prescriptions are typically more expensive and this is the same for longsightedshort sighted and astigmatic prescriptions. Not all clinics charge more for higher prescriptions and this is something you will need to check.

  • Procedure: This is the main factor influencing laser eye surgery cost. Adding Wavefront and Intralase to your procedure will increase the price. It is important to realise however that some clinics will offer Intralase and wavefront as standard.

  • Surgeon: A more experienced laser eye surgeon with better visual outcomes and lower complication rates is likely to command a higher price.

  • Clinic: Clinics with better laser eye surgery results are likely to charge a higher price as are those clinics that offer a lifetime guarantee for laser re-enhancements.

Additional Laser Eye Surgery Cost Factors:

Most laser eye surgery clinics in the UK will offer payment plans and finance plans to help make your laser eye surgery more affordable. Some clinics offer 0% finance but will generally ask that you leave an initial deposit.

Note that there can be wide variations in laser eye surgery cost compared to the advertised price.  Be wary when you see low prices quoted in advertising campaigns as most patients will not fall into that range of prescriptions. The low price will typically only relate to prescriptions up to -1.00 which is very mild. Also this price will only be for the standard treatment and for various reasons you may not be suitable for standard surgery. For example if you have thin corneas your surgeon may insist that you have Intralase Lasik, which will significantly add to the price.

The cost of laser eye surgery is dependent on many factors and the only real way to get an accurate price is to have a laser consultation. Following your consultation you will be most likely given a few different prices for standard and premium procedures. It is then up to you to decide what you can and cannot afford.
