Causes of Glaucoma
Glaucoma is normally caused by a build up of pressure in your eye which results in damage to the optic nerve. The symptoms of Glaucoma and treatments of Glaucoma vary depending on the type of Glaucoma that you have.
The following are the risk factors associated with Glaucoma:
- A Family history of Glaucoma: If any of your first degree relatives (brother, sister, mother, father) have Glaucoma you are at a higher risk of developing the disease. Such people are advised to have an annual eye test.
- Age: You are more likely to develop Glaucoma as you get older.
- Ethnicity: Certain ethnic groups such as Afro- Caribbean’s and Hispanics are more likely to develop the disease.
- Thin corneas: This can be checked by your optician.
- Diabetics: People suffering from Diabetes are more likely to develop Glaucoma.
- High Myopia (short sightedness): People who are very short sighted are more at risk of glaucoma.
If you fall into any of these categories, it is advisable to have regular eyes tests, preferably on an annual basis. Getting regular eye checks means you are much more likely to detect the glaucoma in its early stages, meaning it has less of a chance of impacting on your vision.
