Q.

Do I need laser eye surgery?

My Right eye is perfect. My left eye is +0.25 -0.75 65.0
I have applied for fire service and am awaiting medical and must have 20/20 unaided vision. Do I need surgery? Have I any other options? Many thanks and please reply. Tim

Hi Tim,

With that prescription there is a good chance that even in your left eye you will have 20:20 vision unaided. Are you certain that you need 20:20 vision in both eyes unaided as from reading the fire services visual standards myself I am not sure that you do.

I have applied for Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue service. 20/20 unaided vision was a requirement on application.

Hi Tim

I still think you may be just inside the 20:20 vision requirements but you could always phone your last opticians who should have record of your unaided vision.

Thanks ever so much for your reply and I may get another eye test as the last one was in September. Is there any supplements you know of that could retain my eyesight or even make it better? Thanks again. Tim

Hi Tim,

Unfortunately there aren't any supplements that can improve your vision and don't believe anyone who tells you otherwise! You may be best having another eye test and explaining to the Optometrist what your visual requirements are. Like I said there is a fairly good chance you may be just about ok.

Good luck!

Hi Tim

I have a medical coming up, but its for a different fire service. I really struggled with the eye test that formed part of the aptitudes. Can i ask what the eye exam entailed? Was it more/less difficult than the one you did at the aptitude stage?
Need to put my mind at ease, been worrying about it a lot

Thank you. John
