Q.

Age and laser eye surgery

Can one become too old for laser eye surgery ? I am in excellent health but 78 yrs old. I currently use varifocal glasses and I'm sick of them.

Hi Patricia

Thanks for your question. There is no upper age limit for laser eye surgery although as you get older you are much more likely to start developing cataracts. The average age to start getting cataracts is around 70 years old so this is something that you would have to check with your Optometrist. If you do have cataracts then surgeons generally will not perform laser eye surgery as cataracts can alter the prescription in your glasses, meaning your laser eye surgery would not be long lasting.

Hope this helps.
