Hair loss treatment
By about the age of 50, roughly half the male population have some hair loss. It is therefore not surprising that a large number of people consider hair loss treatment.
It is something that can also affect women and possibly has greater effects on their self esteem than compared to men. The treatment does not work for everyone but for many it offers permanent hair restoration.
What’s involved: Hair loss treatment:
There are many tablet and cream supplements on the market which result in limited success and are generally only suitable for mild hair loss.
For those with more pronounced hair loss, then hair transplantation is likely to be the best option. The ideal candidate for hair transplantation must have healthy existing hair on the back or side of their head as this is where the hair grafts are taken from. They also must be prepared to undergo multiple treatment sessions which may each take several hours.
The procedure: Hair loss treatment:
- It can be performed either under a local or general anaesthetic depending on the extent of the head being treated.
- During the transplant, a graft is taken from the donor area (often back or sides of head) and then attached to the targeted balding area. The grafts tend to be just a few strands of hair as this results in the best outcome.
- Often 3 or more sessions are required to get the desired results for the patient.
Recovery period: Hair loss treatment:
- Minimal discomfort, bruising and swelling are normal following the treatment and you may need oral and/or topical medication.
- The transplanted hair often falls out within 6 weeks but re-growth is expected within 3 months.
Your surgeon may well ask you to refrain from drinking alcohol and smoking both before and after surgery as it can contribute to poor blood circulation and fluid retention.
Like with all surgeries, recovery times differ from one patient to the next and closely following the surgeons post operation instructions normally leads to quicker recover times.
The Risks: Hair loss treatment:
- Infection and scarring.
- Numbness of scalp which normally subsides.
- Skin discolouration.
