Eyelid lift (Blepharoplasty)
Eye lid lift is a procedure used to remove excess skin and fat which can cause drooping eye lids and puffy bags under the eyes. With age our skin loses its elasticity and our muscles tend to slacken resulting in folds in the upper lids, creases in lower lids and a build up a fat under the eyes giving that bagginess appearance.
Blepharoplasty (Eye lid lift) aims to reduce all of these signs, often taking years off a person’s appearance.
The procedure: Eye Lid Lift:
The procedure can last anywhere between 1 and 3 hours and depending on the surgeon's preference is performed either under a general or local anaesthetic.
Upper Eyelid Surgery:
- An incision is made in the natural crease line above the eye lashes and extends to the natural laughter lines at the side of eyes.
- Working through the incision, your surgeon will remove excess fat and trim the sagging muscle and skin. The incision is then stitched up.
Lower Eyelid Surgery:
- An Incision is made below the eye lashes and extends to the natural laughter lines at the side of the eyes.
- Excess fat is removed and the skin is lifted upwards and outwards tightening the area. The overlapping skin is removed.
- The incision is then stitched up.
Recovery Period: Eyelid Surgery:
- Immediately following surgery your eyes will be swollen, bruised, gritty and feel tight. Your surgeon will probably give you medication to minimise your symptoms and suggest you use an ice compress for a few days.
- Stitches will be removed 2 - 7 days after surgery.
- You will probably be able to watch TV and read 2-3 days after surgery.
- You will not be able to wear contact lenses for about 1.5 – 2 weeks after surgery but spectacles can be worn immediately.
- Most people can return to work within 1 week but avoid strenuous activity for 3 weeks or so.
- Swelling and bruising may reach its peak after 1 week and can last up to 1 month.
Your surgeon may well ask you to refrain from drinking alcohol and smoking both before and after surgery as it can contribute to poor blood circulation and fluid retention.
Like with all surgeries, recovery times differ from one patient to the next and closely following the surgeons post operation instructions normally leads to quicker recover times.
The risks: Eyelid lift surgery:
- Double vision (usually temporary).
- Scarring – normally barely visible as hidden in natural creases of the eyelids.
- Dry eyes.
- Asymmetrical size and shape of eyes.
- Drooping of lower lid.
