Choosing a destinationChoosing a medical travel destination

There are many factors which will lead you to choosing a destination, listed below are the main things to consider:

Choosing a destination:

  • Personal preference: Maybe there is a place you have always wanted to visit and the chance to combine that with lower priced treatment is reason enough.

  • Personal ties to a country:  You may have family members or friends in a particular country or perhaps it is the country of your birth.

  • The reputation of the country: Certain countries become renowned for their expertise in a specific treatment area. For example Hungary is considered one of the leading destinations for Dental treatment whereas South Africa has carved out a reputation for providing excellent cosmetic surgery. Such reputations change all the time so be sure to pay close attention to anything you hear from the media.

  • General cost: If you are going to be there for a matter of weeks then cost of accommodation, food and general day to day things is important. Generally the further you are travelling the more expensive the flight and so factor this into your budget. Look to avoid flying in peak season as this will increase cost of flying. Check with your surgeon to see if prices reduce in quieter times (this is sometimes the case). Dont forget to check the exchange rate as this could make a potential destination more or less expensive.

  • Weather: For many people the weather is an important consideration when selecting a destination and also the time of year to travel. If you are someone who prefers cooler weather then consider a country or at least time of the year to reflect this and conversely do the opposite if you prefer hot weather!

  • Insurance: If you already have travel insurance check to see if you are covered for going abroad for treatment. If you have no insurance, when taking out your cover be sure to tell them the exact nature of your treatment being undertaken.(Most standard holiday insurance policies do not cover medical treatment abroad and you may invalidate your policy by doing so)

  • Getting there: Shorter flights where possible are the best option. For long haul flights be sure to try and get a direct flight. This is particularly relevant for the return leg of your journey after your treatment.
