Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth and are used for both cosmetic and functional purposes. They are extremely strong and offer a long term (15 years) solution to missing teeth. They offer increased strength compared to bridges or dentures but this is reflected in the higher price. A dental implant is quite simply a titanium screw that is drilled into your jaw bone and then covered over with a dental crown (false tooth). By fixing the screw into the jaw bone this ensures that the tooth is as strong as your own natural tooth.

Dental implants can generally be carried out on anyone providing you have healthy gums and a fully developed jaw. There may be problems fitting a dental implant if you are a heavy smoker, heavy drinker or grind your teeth excessively.

During the procedure your dentist will first assess that your gums and jaw bone are healthy enough to support the titanium screw. The gum is then cut and pulled back and a small hole is drilled into the exact location on the jaw bone. The titanium implant is then tightly screwed into place and the gum is stitched back. It will then take around 6 months for the implant to fully integrate into jaw bone, during which time you will be fitted with a temporary implant. Once the dentist is happy that everything has healed the crown can then be fitted into the screw and the procedure is complete. There is generally very little maintenance required to maintain the implant but it is still important to have regular dental check-ups.
